Liverpool's impressive unbeaten home run was brought to an abrupt end on Thursday night as they suffered a thumping 2-0 defeat to Atalanta in the UEFA Europa League. The match at Anfield, which was played behind closed doors due to COVID-19 restrictions, saw Liverpool's lackluster performance compounded by Atalanta's clinical finishing.
The visitors opened the scoring in the 34th minute through Josip Ilicic, who curled home a stunning free-kick from the edge of the box. Liverpool struggled to create clear-cut chances throughout the match, and Atalanta doubled their lead just after the hour mark through Duvan Zapata.
The defeat was Liverpool's first home loss in 34 matches, stretching back to April 2017. It also ended their hopes of maintaining their unbeaten record in the Europa League this season.
