Web Dhcp Client Vendor Name Changes

WEB DHCP Client Vendor Name Changes

VENDOR CLASS IDENTIFIER

WEB DHCP is a standard from the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) that is designed to reduce administrative overhead and the complexity of configuring hosts on a network. WEB MSFT 5 0 is a Windows computer; dhcpcd-5 5 6 is an Android device. Its vendor class identifier is in the DHCP request.

CLIENT VENDOR NAME

Additionally, the traditional Client Vendor Name has been updated for some Windows-based devices. This value used to be simply MSFT 5.0. Some devices will now show up as MSFT 5.0. After doing some Googling, it turns out that android-dhcp-13 corresponds to an Android device which is running Android 13 and the MSFT 5.0 corresponds to a Windows device.

For Windows 2000 and above (Vista, 7, 8, etc.), MSFT 5.0 is sent. Since this is a broadcast, all DHCP servers and other machines sniffing the packet know this is a Microsoft computer.
